Password Protect Word Document

Word files are text files that support rich formatting such as alignment, shaping, images, charts. In case your document contains personal or sensitive information you can limit access to your file document by setting a password.

Password Protect is a free secure online web application that enables you to protect Word documents. You can easily add a password to the presentation file within a couple of clicks and download a protected file.

The following Word file-formats are supported:

• Microsoft Word Open XML Document (DOCX) - one of the most popular text file formats that is widely supported by text processing applications such as Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, and OpenOffice Writer
• Microsoft Word Document (DOC) - a binary file format that was replaced with DOCX
• Word Open XML Document Template (DOTX) - Microsoft Word template file that contains default formatting for a document
• Word Document Template (DOT) - a legacy template file format that was replaced with DOTX

To password protect Word documents we're using RC4 Encryption for legacy DOC and DOT formats and AES encryption for newer DOCX and DOTX formats. AES encryption method provides a better protection level compared to RC4 against brute-force attacks that are used by attackers to decrypt a protected file. And we do recommend exporting your DOC and DOT files to more recent DOCX and DOTX formats.

To secure a Word document using Password Protect application upload your file, type the password, click protect button, and download the protected file. The download link will be available for 24 hours. While we automatically remove your files from our servers we also enable you to remove the files manually. After you removed files manually the download link won’t work anymore.
